All pictogram and icon designers must be familiar with Otto Neurath’s Isotype system. The man behind Neurath’s iconography is Gerd Arntz. He was responsible for the creation of over 4,000 pictograms covering social and cultural depictions.
Following the creation of this intricate pictorial system, many designers followed it by implementing pictograms where a universal language was needed. The Olympics was one of the earlier cases where designers were tasked to design sign systems that would not only reflect the local culture of the event but, more importantly, would target an international audience.
